Optical health

Eye examinations serve two purposes; firstly it is the best way to check the accuracy of your vision. Secondly the optometrist can assess the health of your eyes. There are many insidious eye conditions (see below) that happen without you knowing. Regular eye examinations are important and the frequency of these will vary depending upon your age and stage of life. An optometrist can help you determine how often you should be seen.

Book your eye examination

If it’s been over two years since your last examination it is time to get it done again.

It takes 30 minutes for the standard eye examination. Sometimes the optometrist will want to conduct a field test to determine your peripheral vision. They may also want to take a photograph of the back of your eye to check for abnormalities that may be health or vision related.

Optometrists are trained to detect these and many more diseases and eye conditions;

Cataracts, glaucoma, high blood pressure, age related macular degeneration (deterioration of the back of the eye), blind spots, tumours, colour vision and many more.

Think of the optometrist as being the first contact for vision health. They will refer you to relevant health professionals in the event of finding anything important. And of course if you wear contact lenses there will be additional awareness to the health and well being of your cornea.
